The eagle is now just outside the gates of the football field. The building in the background (left) is a fine arts/music room.
New bleachers and a professional running track were added.
A new building (left) spans the quad area where the eagle once stood.
The new building, administration, library and computer lab spans the space between the two story classroom hall and Hillman Center.
Steve Hoza:
During our Junior year, we had to do a major project in Sr. Norma Jean Turner's class. The project had to be on a "relevant social issue." John Paul Morgante's father and mine worked for the same place, a major produce company in Glendale. During this time (1978), many of the growers were being intimidated by the United Farm Worker's union (UFW) to hire illegals and to unionize. Sr. Norma Jean was a big fan of the UFW cause. We weren't. So, along with Rob Tomasek, we did our project as an 8mm film on the UFW and their tactics.
We called it "UFW Persuasion". It was filmed by the groundskeeper at Bourgade, Brian Morphew. You see him at the very end of our epic film.We filmed it in the big field with the three large radio towers that is just west of SS & Jude, at the end of Tuckey Lane. We filmed it on a cold Saturday morning in November 1978. Rob played the non-union farmer, John Paul and I the "representatives" from the UFW. Needless to say, Sr. Norma Jean did not agree with our politics, but we got a decent grade anyway for our effort. Here it is again, after all these years. Note the highly sophisticated end credits.
Connie Mroz (Sachs):
*Freshman year P.E. - having to wear those disgusting one piece, pull-up P.E. uniform things. Yuk! They reminded me of a romper a toddler would wear.
Also: *Mary Jacobs and I ditching a class our Senior year and going to Wendy's at 10:30 a.m. They weren't opened yet. That was before the days of fast-food breakfast. Mary doesn't remember doing that.
*All the toilet paper wads on the ceiling in the girls' restroom.
*Fr. Highberger's Latin classes and throwing erasers instead of working on Latin grammar.
*"The Norma Jean Mean Machine will cream!" (Powder Puff football team Jr. year.)
*" . . .with Vigor and Enthusiasm!!" and "A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace." (Fr. Hoorman's freshman religion class)
*Mrs. Scully's Advanced English class and the huge notebook we had to make and bring to class.
*Advanced Biology and dissecting the dead cats. Jim Wolf decapitated his cat and used the head for a soccer ball. The cats were gangrenous by the end of the semester. Yuk! Also - "Ontogengy recapitulates Philogeny" (means species reproduce themselves)
*Sorting frogs with Mary Ritoch for the frog lab in Mr. Walker's Biology class.
*Jeanne Olson as Oliver. Erin Garrett as Eliza Doolittle.
*"Is there really a Star Abounader?"
*The gym we worked so hard for but never saw.
*Student protests at teacher dismissals. Fr. Hoorman told the Student Council to stay out of it - we didn't know what was going on.
That's it for now. Hope it's a start.
Go VOLS!!
